The New Federalist

“In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place, oblige it to control itself.”

Some Lighthearted Stream-of-Consciousness, Pre-election

Published by eternalthursday at 6:57 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

We’ll do something serious another time. Tomorrow is it, gang, and I can’t help but think about the 2000 election. Since I was out of the country in 2004, it’s all I’ve got to work with. Anyway. It’s not just the date. I’m thinking about 2000, and therefore Al Gore, because of the imminent planetary emergency. Before I call planetary 9-1-1 to turn down the thermostat, let me tell you what prompted this awakening on my part to the dire direness of it all.

I always thought that this business about being “green” and saving the world through taxing carbon and, um, phasing out the coal industry- I thought it was total bull honkey. I mean it was easy to do, standing on the deck of my yacht, sipping umbrella drinks. And then today it hit me. All those leaves on the trees in my yard were already green for so long, but now… not so much. They’re every color but green! And they’re falling off- all of them! And then as they decompose, they release- the horror- CARBON, right directly into the poor, defenseless little environment. It finally hit home for me, after all this time. It’s all true. And all the bunnies cried as they looked on.

I nearly joined in, until I realized that, with the support of the bunnies, I can do something about it. “Do something” being the operative phrase. History has shown that when you get people whipped up into enough of a frenzy, doing “something”  always sounds good. It usually consists of voting with the same part of your brain that processes the smell of Cheez Whiz or half a Slim Jim, and the word “change” is usually tossed about with abandon. Unfortunately it’s too late to register all the little forest critters to vote, so I’ll have to settle for the 2012 race. We’ll be watching closely tomorrow night to see the results. We expect to wake up to a different world on Wednesday, one where all the little forest critters have a voice, where the disenfranchised of the woodland will be heard, and given a tax break. We won’t have to worry about storing acorns for the winter, or about making the nest payment!

Woodland critters of the world, unite!
